Friday Pix: Recommended Reading For The Weekend

On occasional Fridays, I point you towards some recommended reading around the blogosphere:

1. In honor of the late, great Nelson Mandela, #BBC Trending brings you a short, moving video on the minute before Mandela’s death.

2. Eleanor Parker, the actress who played the Baroness Von Schraeder in The Sound of Music, also died recently. Before her death, McSweeney’s did a hilarious send up of the Baroness calling off her wedding.

3. New York-o-philes like myself will be drawn to Brain Pickings’ round up of writers talking about loving – and leaving – New York.

4. I also loved Lisa’s honest account of heartbreak over on Amid Privilege.

5. It’s Christmas! Here’s one person’s hilarious account of their annual family Christmas pageant over on Full Grown People.

6. The Guardian has amassed a wonderful collection of the Year’s Best, Worst and Most Revealing Selfies.

7. Finally, Buzz Feed’s take on How The Media will Report the Apocalypse is – yes, you guessed it – to die for.

Have a wonderful weekend and a wonderful holiday season everyone!

Every Friday I point you towards some recommended reading around the blogosphere:

1. I thought Roger Cohen’s Op-ed in the International Herald Tribune on the whole viral campaign to stop KONY was spot on.

2. Of all the parodies of Greg Smith’s now famous op-ed in the New York Times about why he is quitting Goldman Sachs, I thought this one in Vanity Fair – entitled Why I’m Quitting Pinkberry – was the cleverest.

3. My cyber-friend Lisa has another terrific meditation on her blog Amid Privilege, this one about the difference between “pretty” and “attractive.” Required reading for women of all ages.

4. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s *really* like to work in the Human Resources Department, take a look at Confessions of the HR Department: Drunk and Bleeding is Never a Good Start to the Interview in xoJane.

5. This week’s installment in hilarious belongs to Dadspin’s If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, You’re Fu**ed: Ten Tips For Avoiding Terrible Children’s Books. Yeah, I tried that whole DK thing too…

6. Finally, in the Department of Just Because, a slide show of Staircases that Wow at Slate.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Every Friday I point you towards some recommended reading around the blogosphere:

1. In case you missed this little gem, Lisa Belkin introduces us to the Dad who shot his daughter’s laptop over on The Huffington Post. Really important that you watch the whole video the next time you feel like you’re a bad parent.

2. One of my favorite blogs is Amid Privilege. Here’s Lisa with a very thoughtful Saturday morning post on what it means to be an adult.

3. Really loved the winners of Slate Magazine’s contest to narrate love in three photos. Beautiful and sad.

4. And while we’re on the subject of Valentine’s Day, my inner geek could not resist this post on love and physics over at Symmetry Breaking.

5. I haven’t spent much time over at the newly popular social media site Tumblr but based on these two blogs, I just might need to. Here’s the anti-design website, Fuck Your Noguchi Coffee Table. And here’s the spoof academic blog, Academic Coach Taylor.

6. Finally, for your listening pleasure, here’s what happens when you cross Downton Abbey with The X Files, via The Boston Globe’s Brainiac blog.

Have a great weekend, everybody!
