I think it’s best if I just come out and say this up front: I’m not really sad that Al and Tipper Gore split up.
Yes, I know. I’m an outlier. Nearly everyone I know — and certainly everyone I’m reading — is outright depressed by this separation.
Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s a shame. And it’s a shame because — as my colleague Melinda Henneberger wrote recently — they seemed like a couple who were genuinely in love. Between the 40 years of marriage and the four beautiful kids and the whole high school sweetheart thing and, yes — the kisses — they really looked like they were in it for the long haul.
But somehow, I was much sadder when Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins split up. I was also sadder when — gulp — writer and public radio commentator Sandra Tsing Loh split with her man (and then went on an anti-marriage crusade.)
Why is this?

I am always saddened when folks split up, but I did feel stronger about Susan S and Tim Robbins too…
I think a politician leads a hard, hard life…and now he is trying to save the world?

I read your article. I cannot even begin to imagine if Barack and Michelle were to ever split…

Frankly, the only splits that really speak to me are those of people I love. That smarts, big time. At least the Gore offspring are adults; I don’t known anything personal about the Sarandon-Robbins couple, let alone ages of their children. I do admire their film work & will continue that.

Just back from holiday in Italy and scrambling to get caught up on blog reading! Boy am I behind the times – I didn’t know about any of these splits. Like you I’m not really fussed about the Gores. I see what you mean about Loh, but I’d not heard of her before. I’m really sad about Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. They did everything their way, not the conventional way and they both came across as having strength of character. I start to think that if they can’t make a partnership last, who can? I like the relationship I’m in very much and would hate to see it end. Scary stuff!
